Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ to be announced in February 2018

Just recently we came across a report that suggested that it is highly unlikely that the Samsung’s 2018 flagship will launch at CES next month. However, according to the latest report,  Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will launch officially by the end of February. The reports suggest that the event will supposedly be held on February 27 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Samsung has had a history of launching smartphones at MWC. However, last year the company chose to skip the MWC 2017 and hold a separate “Unpacked” event for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in April. Well, not to forget, it also had the Galaxy Note 7 blunder to cover up.

In other news, Samsung has reportedly canceled the redesign of its flagship Galaxy S9-duo. The smartphones are now said to support the same dual-camera system, just like the ones spotted on the Galaxy Note 8. Samsung has scrapped plans for a new design after it “did not pass the test”. Samsung reportedly wanted to increase its edge-to-edge design leaving only a thin bezel at the top of the phone.

Previous reports showed that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will come with a very similar design to their predecessors. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were expected to have the same 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch, edge-to-edge Super AMOLED “Infinity Display”, with the iconic curved screen still intact.

Samsung was initially planning to introduce an in-display fingerprint sensor with Galaxy S9 but is now reported to have pushed it to the Galaxy Note 9 due to technical limitations. The smartphone is said to feature a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor placed underneath the dual-camera system, addressing criticism of Galaxy S8 users who found the existing fingerprint sensor hard to reach.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will likely be the first smartphones to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset and an optically-stabilized dual-camera setup. It will run Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung’s own customisation but the company is not providing any concrete information about the product.
In terms of other specifications, the Galaxy S9+ is likely to offer 6GB of RAM. The 3.5mm headphone jack is also likely to remain present on the phone. The upcoming phones are expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC or Exynos 9810, depending on the market of sale.
